Santo Domingo Mayor Roberto Salcedo has chosen the widow of late Santo Domingo senator Jacinto Peynado as his running mate in the 16 May election. Salcedo is running for his second re-election.
According to law, candidates for mayor need to choose a woman as deputy mayor. This will be the first time that Margarita Peynado runs for election. Her husband, one of the most successful Santo Domingo senators of all times, ran for President on the PRSC ticket in 1996, the year when President Joaquin Balaguer, leader of the PRSC, subtly endorsed his rival Presidential candidate Leonel Fernandez. The Peynado family made a name for themselves previously, for their ownership of the Toyota dealership. Jacinto Peynado would use up a large share of the family fortune in his political campaigns.
Upon making the announcement, Salcedo said that it demonstrates the two political parties' commitment to work together.
