Writing in today's Listin Diario, Vinicio A. Castillo Seman advises the government to hire international experts to monitor the Barrick Gold mining operation. He says that the company will be using cyanide in the process, which if mishandled could generate an ecological catastrophe of an unprecedented scale in the country.
"The danger that could occur is more serious when one examines the attitude of Barrick Gold after the recent mass poisoning incident. Instead of explaining what happened, the company chose to release a public version that no one believed, claiming that it was caused by food poisoning, which was disproved by a technical and scientific study released last week by the state university that attributed the poisoning to toxic gas," he writes.
"The Dominican government needs to remove the perception in the country that the Barrick Gold will be a kind of state within a state, a separate republic, in which they have a blank check to do and undo, without being accountable to anyone," he writes.
He says that regardless of the advantages the contract for the exploitation of gold and other medals may have, the government cannot abdicate its duty to regulate the company.
