The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) says that it has confiscated 62 packages of cocaine found hidden in two banana freight containers at the Port of Manzanillo in Montecristi province, following a joint operation with the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Four people have been arrested.
Listin Diario reports that the authorities confiscated modern communications equipment would be used by the drug trafficking ring.
DNCD chief Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo said that Ukrainian Sparta Reklino, and Dominicans Juancito Hiciar Blanco Then, Jose Juan Cabral Cerda and Francisco Humberto Camino Perez were arrested in connection with the find. Camino Perez was prosecuted for trafficking 76 kilos of cocaine in Azua in July 2005.
The containers arrived from Belgium in the ship Summer Wind that was due to ship bananas from the area.
The Dominican Banana Producers Association (Adobananao) and Banana Cluster spokesmen Victor Pena and Elso Jaquez expressed their concern that 110,000 banana boxes that are due to be shipped to Europe were at risk of spoiling as a result of the delays following the findings.
