A fourth person with links to fugitive Puerto Rican drug baron Jose David Figueroa Agosto was murdered on Friday. This latest victim was 36-year old Jose Gabriel Arias Castillo (Alex el Pelotero) who was said to have been stabbed seven times while exercising in the patio of the La Victoria jail.
Listin Diario reports that inmate Jaime Espinal Alcantara allegedly paid RD$200,000 to two inmates to commit the murder. The two accused of carrying out the murder are Kelvin Rafael Montilla Dominguez, in jail for drug trafficking, and Cristian Martinez Lora, in jail for robbery.
Arias Castillo was in jail after being caught with 293 kilos of cocaine and more than US$200,000 in cash in Arroyo Hondo and Villa Mella on 17 September 2009.
Prisons Department director Manuel de Jesus Perez Sanchez attributed the death to a fight over personal matters. He announced that Eddy Brito, ex-husband of fugitive Sobeida Felix Morel was being moved to a maximum-security cell in Najayo. Sobeida is said to be the lover and accomplice of Figueroa Agosto, who is also sought in Puerto Rico where he escaped jail after being sentenced to 209 years. Brito is accused of money laundering.
Aristides Richardson Jimenez, coordinator of the church jail assistance program, said that La Victoria jail is controlled by organized crime. "That jail provides no security for the inmates or the visitors. It should not house human beings," he said. He said that inmates in sensitive cases should be moved to centers under the new jail model. La Victoria jail was designed for 1,000 inmates and has 4,000.
Diario Libre reports that the first Figueroa Agosto associate to be murdered was former Police lieutenant Jose Amado Gonzalez y Gonzalez when returning to his apartment at Torre Serena on Ave. Anacaona on 24 December 2009. At the end of January, Omar Ramon Antigua Polanco, said to be a close aide of Figueroa, was murdered at the Carrefour supermarket parking lot on the Duarte Highway. He had been mentioned as responsible for the drugs confiscated in Arroyo Hondo and Villa Mella. Alfredo Rodriguez (Nino Pata Corta) was murdered by 26 gunshots in La Romana on 10 March.
Relatives of Arias Castillo doubt the explanation. They say he had told prosecutor Flor Maria Nova that he suspected he could be killed, as reported in El Dia.
