found some info but it is pretty old....any idea which carriers have best rates to Canada for a prepaid phone?...I know where the orange store is but can't seem to find claro or viva....any directions would be sweet...who has a better cheap phone and coverage for the area (sosua-> playa grande->santiago)

I know they are all pretty much the same price for the cheap phone but who do you prefer?

thanks, ideal

You don't have a Skype phone to call back to Canada?

oldskool here....no laptop either:o...notepad after the evenings events will hopefully net a reasonable trip report....and pictures speak a thousand words:cheesygrin:....want something to keep in contact with the homefront (yes, I know but I am sure I am not the only one) and my new golfing partners. Decent phone that the battery doesn't crap out after an hour of stand-by and a decent rate to go with it would be what the doctor ordered.

orange and Claro service are equal in Sosua area.... orange to orange , claro to claro has the best rates
calls back to the mother land aren't that costly on your card.
Best claro spot is right on Pedro Clisante, right next to the Shark Bar... across the street from the big hole in the ground next to harrisons jewelers on the corner of pedro clisante and dr. rosen

You can also add to your Claro phone using their - Easy load from abroad service. https: / / www.etopuponline.com (https://www.etopuponline.com/) or http://www.minutetransfer.com (http://www.minutetransfer.com/).

Charge to a pay pal account or cc. More info at Claro.com.do

I have used both, to keep my # active. Just add before 120 days.

i was not aware that it would go inactive!

i just came home, charged, pulled the battery, and packed it in my suitcase.

i'll just add time to it via paypal or cc, and not have to deal with cards at all.

It never hurts to pick up a 100 peso card just before your leaving put it in your suitcase comes in handy couple months later when you land at airport rather than fucking around trying to call your friends with no phone service.

I'll be in the DR in May and was thinking about getting a phone to keep in touch with home/work. Would it cost about the same to call the states.

If you use a local phone...orange/claro, its about 8-10 pesos per minute, not much. b/c with your US phone, the roaming can be a killer... make sure you turn your phone off while in the DR or it will roam...

Johnfromnorthjersey, IMO Get a Claro Number. You can buy a cheap phone there. Or bring a unlocked phone that takes a chip. I got a ATT -unlocked phone from e-bay. You will need to take your passport. Claro has a store right in Sousa, near the phone tower.

I was down in April with Ideal41. He got a Orange phone there. About 50 % of the time I could not reach him in Sosua.

Claro works in Sosua ,pop and at BB. I also us it to call home. and check my voicemail on my home cell phone.

just get a skype account and if you have a smartphone/Iphone/blackberry, you can install skype on your smartphone. find a wifi signal at your hotel or an eating establishment.. connect your phone to it and call home all you want for 2.50 a month. (well, not all you want, but 10,000 minutes a month.. personally i wouldnt want to speak to anyone for 10,000 minutes a month) it costs less for a years phone service with skype than buying a phone, charging it with minutes and using it for that week.

One thing.. skype stopped putting out the official release of skype for windows mobile, so if you have windows mobile on your phone, youre gonna have to search the web a little to get the application.
One more thing.. no real incoming phone number unless you pay extra.. but people can call you using your skype id.

if dont mind taking you BB with you...call up your carrier to unlock your phone and tell them you on a business trip in DR...they'll give you the code. When you get to the airport take your SIM card out so you dont get any roaming charges (even if someone call you, you will be charged even for for text and email) go to the claro or orange store with your passport, buy a sim card and you are good to go once the BB starts up (yeah I know they take forever)
You would be good to go from there and you will have all your contacts in your phone if you have to call home with all your BB features and the signal/service is so much better than the cheap phone.

In March I stayed at Don Antonio's on Dr. Rosen. Across the street from the hotel is an Orange Shop. I purchased their cheapest phone and the sim for 500 pesos (i think it came with 50-100 pesos credit too). Take a copy of your passport with you. Takes 5-10 minutes.

You can purchase credits for Orange here.

http://www.orange.com.do/web/guest/transaccion1

www.directrecharge.com (http://www.directrecharge.com)

I did this in April and my credits lasted my whole trip in May/June. Great way to keep your number and hit the ground with credits.

In April, www.etopuponline.com (http://www.etopuponline.com/) did not work with Orange but maybe that has been fixed since they now have a link on the Orange.com.do site.

I paid 1080 to add the internet to my sim card and used my mackberry and
it saved me a lot of money. When i wanted to talk to people back home I simply used BBM aim or MSn messenger or emailed them. ALso Skype mobile came in handy.
