Yesterday, Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito proposed that RD$1 billion needed to be deducted from the annual budget allocated to Congress and that those funds should be used to improve the educational system, according to a report by Diario Libre. The AG complained about the "exaggerated" RD$3.68 billion (3.10% of the national budget) assigned to Congress. Dominguez said that those resources should be allocated to education, which is an area of priority. He said that education is the basis for development. The AG also asked for a revision of the legislation that establishes budgetary percentages and for more control of city hall expenses, which are currently RD$11 billion. According to Dominguez, most of the funds should be spent on physical works, not on the payroll and political favoritism. Dominguez Brito will be Senator for the province of Santiago come the change in Congress as of 16 August 2006.
