MONTREAL—A Canadian woman has allegedly been murdered on her ranch in the Dominican Republic.

According to media reports, Quebecer Louise Gaudreault was found stabbed to death Thursday morning.

The 54-year-old had been living in the Caribbean country for 25 years, where she owned land near the resort town of Cabarete.

Foreign Affairs confirmed Sunday there was an incident in the Dominican Republic that involved a Canadian citizen but refused to give further details.

This is the second death of a Quebecer in the country in recent months.

In December, a 42-year-old Quebec man was found dead in a private villa 25 kilometres from Puerto Plata.

This is why I always carry. Obviously not a traditional weapon. A SureFire flashlight. Bright enough to blind in daylight, scalloped edges on both ends. Kind of expensive, but worth it the first time it's needed. Never had an issue with customs, including my January trip when I got the full search routine comiing into JFK.

There haven't been many stories of chicas pulling on foreign customers, but 99% carry some form of blade.

Probably not sufficient in that circumstance, but I doubt the outcome would have been made worse. Something is better than nothing, though in her own house she must have been surprised, or I would guess a kitchen knife would have been picked up. I didn't know the lady or the situation.

A German businessman, Friedhelm (Fredhelm) Dietrich Martín Schroter, 48, was attacked and robbed in Cabarete on Tuesday afternoon.. The thieves got away with over US$4,500 and a camera.

However, the robbery was reported to the national police who spotted and pursued the car used by the robbers in Arroyo Seco, Sosua. The occupants of the car started shooting at the Police who returned fire and injured one of the gang.

Angel Alberto Rodriguez de la Cruz, the injured man was arrested and subsequently admitted his involvement in the robbery.

Police Sgt Toribio Rosario Morillo was also injured in the gunfight, receiving multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the medical clinic at Northern Air Command where he was treated and later allowed home.

The arrested youth Rodriguez de la Cruz, 18, lived in Bella Vista, Sosua and was the driver of the Chevrolet Avalanche used in the robbery. Five spent cartridges were found in the vehicle when it was searched.

Francois Jean Paul Dubuet, 59 years old, was living with a young girl, Aracelis Canela Rosario. She told police investigators in Nagua that Dubuet had got up early on Sunday to make coffee, but when he did not return she went looking for him and found him hanging from a mango tree.

According to stories in the area, the Frenchman was being harassed by the relatives of a minor, with whom he was allegedly cohabiting. These relatives had supposedly demanded RD$200,000 not to report this to the authorities.

It also emerged that Dubuet had a fight several weeks ago with two thieves attempting to steal from his home.

The investigations of this case are in charge of National Police Major Maldonado, who heads the Crimes and Homicide Section of the Nagua police.

I would hazard a guess that this wouldn't be the 1st time that a homicide was made to look like a suicide.

Businessman killed in armed robbery in Sosua

The victim was identified as Omar Rodriguez, whose business was in front of the bakery, close to the Catholic Church.

Witnesses reported 4 or 5 assailants attacked Rodriguez, shooting as they entered his shop. It seems he was shot 3 times at point blank range. The thieves managed to escape with an unknown quantity of travelers checks and foreign currency, driving off in a white Daihatsu Terios with no licence plate.

Rodriguez managed to stagger outside shouting for help and neighbors, including the owner of a nearby laundry, rushed to his aid but he died before they could get him to hospital..
Rodriguez was an active member of the Templo Bíblico church in Sosua Abajo and had his exchange and organic coffee business for 15 years.

151 Dominican convicts returned by USA, 823 so far this year

This group brings to 823 the total number of returnees in the period from January to April this year, an increase of more than 44 percent over the same time last year.

The immigration authorities at the Las Americas airport reported that the returnees had served sentences for drug trafficking, assault, theft, fraud, forgery, kidnapping, among other crimes committed on American soil.

The group is expected to reach the airport at 1:45 pm in a plane chartered by the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the United States.

The Director of Immigration, Vice Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez, ordered an assignment of officers and officials of his institution together with staff from other agencies to receive the returnees.

The group will be taken first to the headquarters of Immigration, and then sent to the appropriate institutions, National Police and Drug Enforcement Administration.

The group completed prison sentences in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, California, Massachusetts, San Antonio, Texas and other U.S. locations.

A million Dominicans live legally in the United States while hundreds of thousands are there without visas.

Gang of youths arrested in taxi driver killings

Police investigators yesterday arrested members of a gang of six people, including four minors, and two girls, ranging in age from 15 to 17. They are charged with robbing and killing taxi drivers in the capital city, Santo Domingo.

The information was provided this morning by the police chief, Major General Rafael Guillermo Guzmán Fermín, who expressed concern about this type of organized crime by minors. He said the adults arrested were Joel de la Rosa, 18, and Jesus Reyes Gonzalez, 20, who had in their possession a gun, knives and other tools used in their crimes.

Major General Guzmán reported that among the taxi drivers who had been killed were Adeliza Calderón González, whose body was found tied hand and foot yesterday afternoon in a vacant lot in the Brisas del Este area.

Another victim, Anito Beltrán, was killed by gunshot wounds on January 14, in the Los Molinos de la Charles. Estanislao Cayetano Pascual, was also shot and found on Christmas day last year inside a red Toyota at kilometer 8 ½ on the Carretera Mella, Cansino Viejo.

Another cab driver allegedly murdered by the detainees is Jhonatan Bello D `Oleo, who was hanged and burned with corrosive acid, and found on the second of this month.

Nelson Tavarez Hernandez, was stabbed and beaten and found dead, tied hand and foot, on March 27.
Another victim attributed to the same gang is Navy Captain, Hernández Romero Sánchez who died of gunshot wounds on 16 April 2009, and had been stripped of his belongings and his weapon. Also, Joan Manuel Rodriguez Balleste who was also left tied hand and foot in the area of Los Mameyes on September 17, 2007.

Major General Guzmán called for the integration of all sectors of society, to pay attention to the restoration of moral and ethical values among adolescents.

"This distresses me greatly and I reiterate that it is alarming that one of the girls who joined the gang was the first to begin to stab their victims," he said.

"Parents should spend more time with their children, as this type of problem is a situation that is caused by family upbringing," said the police chief.

Santo Domingo.- Immigration Agency director Sigfrido Pared today revealed that 300 foreigners have been deported from the Dominican Republic in the last six months, who were hiding out here after committing various crimes in their country.
He said the deportations cost Immigration 1.5 million pesos monthly and include citizens from Germany, Spain, France, U.S., Canada, Peru and others.
The official said the foreigners have broken the country’s laws, others have overstayed their visa and others are wanted in their respective countries, which alert the Dominican authorities. “This deportation process has a very high cost of around 1.5 million pesos monthly, but despite the cost it’s necessary to avoid greater evils.”
He noted that even if they break the law when those foreigners have residency the process becomes slower, but if they are here illegally the deportation is carried out via the administrative route.



But they were in hiding and most likely not bothering anyone.
