Late Saturday, the death toll since Thursday stood at 14, but 8 more people were killed according to preliminary reports on Sunday, for a total toll of 22. Of these, 2 had drowned, while 20 died in traffic accidents.
Regardless, the death toll is expected to be less than in the past two years. The Emergency Operations Center reports that at least 319 people were involved in 107 accidents. 127 motorcycles and 63 vehicles were involved in the accidents, according to the third bulletin. Last year 16 people drowned.
The Dario Contreras hospital said that compared to the usual 150 trauma accident cases it treats on any normal day, an average of 103 had been received through Saturday.
General Juan Manuel Mendez of the COE said that as of the third bulletin last year, there were 48 deaths. A fourth bulletin is due to be issued.
Mendez attributed the decline in casualties to the prevention operations located at strategic points, closing of dangerous beaches and bathing spots, the ban on cargo truck circulation and the non-tolerance of transporting of more than two people on a motorcycle, enforcement of helmet use for motorcycle driving, and the ban on passengers riding in the back of pick-up trucks.
The Civil Defense Corps reported a 75% reduction in traffic accidents, and attributed this to the success of the safety plan, which sent 40,000 volunteers and security workers to enforce safety and preventive measures from Thursday to Sunday.
As the exodus of vehicles returned to the cities, vacationers were greeted by political campaigners waving their banners, a reminder that the campaigns for the municipal and congressional election of 16 May would be in full force as of this Monday.
