Higher Education Minister Ligia Amada Melo is calling on the government to stop building more state university UASD regional centers without carrying out feasibility studies into what courses they should be offering. Melo criticized the lack of quality in these establishments. "The evidence we have is that the branches that have been opened recently do not have the physical or human conditions to operate. They are offering careers that do not require more than desks, chalk and an eraser in a bad physical environment, she said. She said that students who enroll fall into a trap, because to offer students the opportunity of carrying out half-baked studies, so they become mediocre professionals, and then will not be able to compete with others, is to scam them," she said. She said that the fact that the UASD has an open-door policy does not mean there are no controls or limits.
