Hundreds of teachers and administrative staff have been removed from the Ministry of Education payroll. Radhames Camacho, president of the Dominican Teachers Association (ADP) that represents the public school teachers, was critical of the method used and the speed with which the dismissals were made.
The employees were removed after an audit showed they were not fulfilling the duties for which they were being paid. Education Minister Melanio Paredes defended the dismissals on the grounds that it is a measure that seeks to eliminate the chaos in the system that causes millions of pesos worth of losses. Paredes said he would reinstate anyone who could justify receiving the wage. He said the audit uncovered several people who live abroad but still were being paid a wage.
