Hundreds of people marched to Cotui on Easter in protest against the contract the Dominican government has signed with Barrick Gold, the world's largest gold mining company, and the potential negative effects on the environment.
The protestors called for the government and Barrick to modify the contract to enforce remedial and preventive measures. Protestors fear that the gold mining operation will contaminate food production in the region. There is already major pollution in the area as a result of the previous Dominican government operated Rosario Mine. Protestors fear there will be further pollution of the waters of the Yuna River and Hatillo Dam.
In an article in El Caribe, former economic advisor to President Hipolito Mejia, economist Andy Dauhajre warns that all the attention on the environmental aspect of the contract is diverting attention from the bad economic deal the Fernandez administration accepted with Barrick.
