Speaking on 31 March, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez said that he was sure that Puerto Rican drug baron Jose David Figueroa Agosto has been "very protected" both in the DR and in Puerto Rico. Figueroa Agosto walked from a Puerto Rican jail where he had been sentenced to 209 years, after the jail authorities accepted false release papers he presented. The Cardinal called for protection for anyone who is in jail in connection with the drug trafficking case.
Speaking at a press conference with Father Luis Rosario at the Casa de la Juventud, he said that it is apparent that drug traffickers with ties to Figueroa Agosto are trying to eliminate anyone who may endanger their operations. He mentioned the three who have already been murdered. "Three of the friends and trusted aides and accomplices have fallen and this can not go on. If someone is arrested and identified as an accomplice of the Figueroa Agosto group, necessary protection should be provided, unless those called to protect the witnesses are not those who are involved with the group that this criminal is leading," he said in Hoy.
Writing in Hoy, Claudio Acosta asks how to reach the protectors and patrons of Figueroa Agosto, if as Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, those who could be witnesses of the ties in the DR of these drug traffickers have been silenced forever. He also asks: "Is there really an interest on the part of the authorities, in knowing the names of the powerful and well hidden sponsors?"
Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez also called for a thorough investigation into the individuals who may be the local accomplices in the Arturo del Tiempo drug smuggling operation.
