An automobile fire led to a huge traffic jam along the 27 de Febrero Avenue in Santo Domingo yesterday morning. One of the "publicos" that services the 27 de Febrero route caught fire after a fender-bender inside one of the tunnels. No injuries were reported. Firemen could not reach the vehicle until it was burned beyond recognition. The extractors inside the tunnel were not working. Fire chief Luis Herasme said that the lack of extractors was a major issue but the fire department was able to carry out its work using its smoke absorbing apparatus and respiratory gear. According to the chief, it was fortunate that the vehicle used gasoline rather than the cheaper propane gas. The chief also pointed to the fact that the fire extinguishers that were originally placed in the tunnel had been stolen long ago and the traffic control cameras were not working.
