The Dominican Council of Bishops, the Catholic Church's highest governing body, has finished celebrating its 44th General Assembly and has issued a message to all Dominicans, calling for an end to violence. The message was presented by council president Archbishop Ramon Benito de la Rosa y Carpio. In essence, the bishops expressed their sympathy for all the Dominican families that have suffered during the latest outbreak of violence. On the question of the violence itself, the bishops say that it is now complicated by drug use and drug trafficking, and they recall a message that they published more than ten years ago that called for the rule of law and justice. The bishops say that a serious look at the current situation will show that violence is directly related to the "disorder" that exists in every sphere: personal, familial, social, cultural, political, economical, national and international. Their conclusion is that this disorder promotes rejection, loss of hope and frustration, which then leads people towards violence. The document also touches on the possibility that with the legislature "the same color as the Executive", something will be done about the country's basic services, and declares electricity to be the "priority of priorities" because of its effect on national welfare. The bishops include housing, education and jobs among the other important issues the government needs to solve. The document ends with an exhortation for parish priests and deacons to continue preaching the values of love of life, the building of parochial schools and to continue to care for the people's suffering.
