The announcement by the Shell Company that it was interested in selling its assets in the Dominican Republic has brought at least three entities into the arena. El Caribe says that very reliable sources are claiming that a Dominican company involved in the sale of alcoholic beverages is one of the interested parties as well as a British company and one from Venezuela. The source told El Caribe that Shell decided to sell its assets due to an ongoing conflict with the government, which also involves another oil company, one in which a high ranking government official has interests. Francisco Javier Garcia, the Minister of Industry and Commerce confirmed the sale, saying that the CEO of Royal Dutch Shell had spoken to President Fernandez confirming the decision to sell off all its assets in the Dominican Republic. The gasoline retailers association ANADEGAS told El Caribe reporters that the announcement is a ploy by Shell aimed at securing larger profit margins. The ANADEGAS spokesperson said that he had information suggesting that if Shell leaves the country it would be replaced by Total ELF Fina.
