[DR1] Fernandez will look into Verizon deal

President Leonel Fernandez is to attend a meeting tomorrow that will look at the issues surrounding the sale of Verizon to the Mexican company, American Movil. The President will meet with Tax Department (DGII) director Juan Hernandez and the head of Indotel, Jose Rafael Vargas. Citing sources close to the negotiations, El Caribe says that President Fernandez is very interested is settling the issue in a satisfactory manner. Given the demands of the Tax Department, local businessmen and economists are worried that the situation might well generate bad press that could scare off future investors. Sources in Verizon told El Caribe reporters that in cases such as this, the head office has told the local affiliate to pursue the issues through the courts and institutions.
