The Dominican Senate has approved the proposal to change some parts of the Civil Code in two consecutive readings. The reform of the Civil Code was produced by a commission headed by Senator Enriquillo Reyes Ramirez and included suggestions made by institutions such as the Supreme Court and the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra. The newer code introduces major changes to the judicial and social order that was established over 100 years ago. For example, sexual freedom is now included among people's personal freedoms. A total of 126 articles and 195 paragraphs were eliminated from the former code. The legislative bill now goes before the Chamber of Deputies. It will include new judicial terms for defining marriage, divorce, parental authority and economic relations.
