The rector of the state university UASD, Franklin Garcia Fermin has denied that the institution opens regional branches without carrying out feasibility studies to determine the real academic needs of the location. He said that for a branch to be opened, the process starts with a request from the community, which is then studied by the Coordinating Office of Regional Centers and the University Planning Office that carries out these studies prior to the installation.
He was responding to comments by Higher Education Minister Ligia Amada Melo, who criticized recent branches opened by the UASD. Melo criticized the careers that are being offered, saying that students are being scammed with a low quality education. She criticized the fact that political considerations prevail in the decisions to open the new centers.
She said that students who enroll fall into a trap, because to offer students the opportunity of carrying out half-baked studies, so they become mediocre professionals, and then will not be able to compete with others, is to scam them". She said that the fact that the UASD has an open-door policy does not mean there are no controls or limits.
Garcia Fermin told Hoy that the centers have been positive. "When the UASD arrives in a region everything changes. Poverty is alleviated, even while it may be slightly, and the economy is activated," he said in defense of the centers that are funded by the government.
