The Caribbean Express ferry service between Mayaguez and Santo Domingo will stop running on 15 April, due to a business conflict between Ferries del Caribe and the Port of Mayaguez administration in Puerto Rico. If the impasse is solved, passenger service could resume in December, according to Ferries del Caribe executive vice president Liana Pena.
The Caribbean Express carries about 170,000 passengers, 19,000 passenger vehicles and 11,000 trucks annually.
Last April, Ferries del Caribe relocated its homeport to San Juan after 10 years of providing ferry service from the DR to Mayaguez. Caribbean Business in Puerto Rico reports that the decision to reroute from Mayaguez was made after Ferries del Caribe was unable to reach a deal with Holland Group, the private operator that runs the Port of Mayaguez, according to Ferries del Caribe vice president Eric Gonzalez.
Ferries del Caribe returned to Mayaguez after the Ports Commission took steps to strip the Holland Group of its contract to run the Port of Mayaguez. The management deal was signed in May 2007 after the commonwealth Ports Authority turned jurisdiction over the port to the Mayaguez municipal government in June 2004.
But the spat between the Ports Commission and the Holland Group picked up after the company was unable to reach a deal on fees to keep Ferries del Caribe at the Port of Mayaguez as its base for ferry service to the Dominican Republic. Ferries del Caribe left for San Juan and 230 workers lost their jobs.
