The government is assuring a skeptical Dominican public that there will be no new tax hikes or what have been called "tax reforms" following the elections. There will be no increases in electricity rates either. At least that is what they are saying.
Vice President Rafael Alburquerque denied claims that the government is thinking of introducing a new tax reform package and of increasing the electricity rates. Quoted in El Nuevo Diario, the VP says that this idea from the opposition PRD party spokesmen is typical political gossip, since in his words, "they know they are losing".
Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa recently admitted that the government agreed to flexible electricity rates in its letter of intent to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He explained, however, that "flexible" does not mean that the rates are going to go up. According to Bengoa, it means that if oil prices go down the electricity rates should go down and if they go up, well, the electricity rates will go up.
