There has been a marked decline in crime along Santo Domingo's Malecon seafront boulevard (George Washington Avenue) after a police patrol was instated, but hoteliers are complaining that prostitutes are still working in the areas where public lighting has yet to be restored. The president of the Santo Domingo Hotel Association, Roberto Henriquez described the level of prostitution as "disgusting". He said it causes problems when tourists try to enter the major hotels with transvestites and prostitutes, which is not permitted. "Prostitution in our country is not prohibited, but it should be possible to create an area where these people can carry out their business...", said the businessman.
Although National District municipality spokesperson Jose Miguel Carrion assured reporters that two of the electricity distributors were at work repairing the damaged lights along the Malecon, Henriquez called for them to work faster. He expressed his concern at the fact that such an attractive area was so neglected.
Despite the remodeling of the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Park, located just off the avenue and the ambitious plan announced by the authorities, Henriquez said that nothing has changed yet.
In response to a complaint by Haydee Kuret de Rainieri, the president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association (ASONAHORES), there are now more patrols along the seafront.
Journalists sent by Diario Libre to investigate the area yesterday found that there is a police presence there. A total of 263 people, 66 from the National Police, 45 from the Municipal Police, 20 from Politur and a further 137 agents make up the personnel assigned to the area. These men and women work three shifts with the National Police covering a large part of the nighttime duty.
