Speaking at the opening of the World Class Sustainable Tourism Clusters Conference at the Barcelo Bavaro Convention Center in Punta Cana, executive director of the National Competitiveness Council (CNC) Andres Vanderhorst Alvarez called for promoting nationwide awareness of clusters He encouraged sectors related to the tourism industry to work to achieve their cluster awareness. "Clusters mean the effort and dedication of all, and not only of some, as used to be the case in the DR," he said.
Haydee Rainieri, president of the National Hotels & Restaurants Association (Asonahores) gave the welcoming address in the name of the hotel and restaurant sector. She praised the capacity that clusters have for involving the community, making important contributions to competitiveness and development. She called for the creation of a "cluster nation" with joint action by businesses on an individual level, on a collective level, of involved sectors, and local and central government. "I see the development of the tourism clusters as an end to the fallacy that Dominican tourism development is one of exclusion, based on enclaves where the community is left outside," she said.
The conference was organized by the National Competitiveness Council with the backing of The Competitiveness Institute (TCI) and local sponsors.
