Twenty minors smuggled in from Haiti have been rescued by the authorities and sent to a children's home. The children were begging in Santiago, the country's second largest city. The Migration Department says that the children also worked cleaning vehicle windows on street corners. The minors told the authorities their parents were alive and that they had given the traffickers permission to take them to Santiago.
According to reports, some Haitian parents agree to deliver their children to these traffickers, who promise their children will have a better life in children's homes in Santiago. In most cases, the children are exploited on city streets and have to hand over most of the money they collect for begging or cleaning windows to their "sponsors", as reported in Diario Libre.
