President Leonel Fernandez returned yesterday from his trip to the Colombian city of Cartagena, after attending the World Economic Forum for Latin America. The President held meetings with his Colombian counterpart Alvaro Uribe as well as business leaders and politicians. On his return to the DR, Fernandez was met by a committee of high-ranking Armed Forces and National Police officials, but the heavy rains forced the cancellation of a more elaborate welcome.
During his meeting with President Uribe, they discussed joint plans for an energy project involving an under-sea cable from Colombia to the Dominican Republic. Fernandez also took part in "New Horizons for Haiti", a panel discussion on reconstruction after the devastating 12 January earthquake.
In addition, Fernandez offered to serve as a mediator for several Colombians being held in jail in Venezuela on espionage charges, according to El Nuevo Diario. The President said that he had been invited to Venezuela to attend the 19 April celebrations of the Bicentennial of Venezuelan Independence. He said, "we are always ready to establish dialogue with the Venezuelan authorities on this or any other issue that means better relations between Venezuela and Colombia".
