After confirmation from a laboratory in Puerto Rico that the batch of flavored milk served in the school breakfast when several children suffered food poisoning was in fact bacteria-free, the Minister of Education decided to re-establish milk distribution in all schools. At the same time he cancelled the contracts with two of the bakeries that supplied bread and cakes to the Angel Rosario School in Maimon, Monsignor Nouel province, where several cases of food poisoning occurred, because of a high presence of bacteria in the food.
Education Minister Melanio Paredes said that six bakeries out of the 138 that supply the breakfast snacks have now been suspended. He said that the other establishments are undergoing an inspection process.
Paredes reported that they would soon be issuing checks for RD$50 million as an advance payment to the bakers. He assured reporters that the Hacienda Ministry has RD$250 million available to pay the arrears to bakers and other school breakfast suppliers, which are owed more than RD$300 million, as reported in Diario Libre.
