The Dominican Sugar Institute (Inazucar) authorized the import of 32,000 tons of sugar on Thursday. The move came as a result of a sugar shortage on local markets, attributed to increased exports of the staple to Haiti as well as some speculation. Inazucar director Faustino Jimenez told reporters that "unscrupulous traders" have taken advantage of the increase in demand in the Haitian market to raise prices and hoard sugar. The imported sugar was purchased from Brazil, Honduras and Guatemala.
