First Lady Margarita Cedeno says that her office will cover the medical costs of separating the conjoined (Siamese) twins who were born in Santo Domingo last Thursday. The babies, who are at the Luis E. Aybar Hospital, will be taken to Plaza de la Salud for the operation. Specialists have already begun to evaluate the twins. Plaza de la Salud has the only liver transplant unit in the country with a team of liver surgery specialists, as reported in Listin Diario.
Maria Teresa and Teresa Maria are the otherwise healthy conjoined twins who share a liver. They were born by c-section and weighed 12 pounds at birth. Doctors at the hospital were expecting the mother to give birth to normal twins. Elisandra Santos already has four children.
