Delegates on a business mission from the Spanish principality of Asturias have expressed interest in making alliances with Dominicans in the areas of energy and waste management, areas in which they have significant expertise. Severino Garcia Vigor, president of the Asturias Business Federation (FEDE) said that several members of the mission currently visiting the DR have looked into areas of rural tourism, renewable energy, automobile manufacturing and information technology. Executives from 22 businesses in Asturias, Spain visited.
At the Presidential Palace, the president of the Principality of Asturias, Vicente Alvarez Areces said there was interest in investing. He mentioned that Globasol has agreed to build a biodiesel plant in the south of the country, a EUR40 million investment. He said Spanish investors are interested in building a wastewater plant, a EUR12.5 million investment in Santiago, using an Asturias water fund. Alvarez Areces said that the Spanish companies that have fared best during the current global economic crisis have been export companies.
Participants at the press conference on the Asturias mission included Graciano Torres Gonzalez, advisor on industry and jobs to the Principality of Asturias, Eddy Martinez, director of the Center for Export and Investment (CEI-RD) and Manuel Garcia Arevalo, president of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the DR.
