The private company that supplies electricity in Samana province says that a notification of a new 16% ad-valorem tax on natural gas from the Ministry of Industry of Commerce and Ministry of Hacienda has taken them by surprise. The notification arrived on 22 March 2010, as reported in Diario Libre. The Luz y Fuerza power company complains that the government is demanding retroactive payment of import taxes for fuels already used to generate power that has already been served and collected on from September to December 2009. Luz y Fuerza is also requesting permission to install a line to serve power generated at their wind station in Las Guasumas. The Superintendence of Electricity has not authorized the installation of the line.
