On Sunday the police arrested six people, including four minors, and a hair-raising story emerged of how they are suspected of stabbing or strangling their victims, usually taxi drivers.
One of the minors, a girl, confessed she would stab her victims, getting high at the sight of the blood flowing, and would then have sex with her boyfriend, reports Diario Libre on the arrest of the youths who are accused of murdering taxi drivers in eastern Santo Domingo. One youth admitted that the robberies were committed to pay for drugs and pay for the orgies that would take place at motels on the east side of the city.
Police spokesman General Nelson Rosario said that a team of investigators headed by General Jose Polanco Gomez is researching the case that will be taken to justice.
The youths are part of a gang that is suspected of robbing and killing at least 7 taxi drivers in Santo Domingo East. The gang of six includes two girls aged 15 and 17.
Reportedly, one of the two minors would call a taxi company and when the cab arrived, four would board in the back seat and two would sit with the driver. When they got to their stop, one of the backseat passengers would use a rope to strangle the driver or the taxi driver would be stabbed. Another of the minors would search the vehicle for money and anything that could be sold.
One of the most recent victims was a 60-year old man who the gang had left for dead. The man sought help and the Police was called. Before, a sister of one of the victims had announced her brother was missing.
"They are known to have murdered seven taxi drivers, but we are investigating the death of two others in December to see if they are also responsible for those," said Rosario.
The victims include Adeliz Calderon Gonzalez, Anito Beltran, Estanislao Cayetano Pascual, Jhonatan Bello d'Oleo and Nelson Tavarez Hernandez.
The hair-raising story has encouraged campaigners seeking to modify the Minors Code to introduce stiffer penalties for minors committing crimes. Currently, a maximum sentence of five years in jail is allowed for people under the age of 18.
The arrests were made after taxi driver Fisher Fernandez survived one of the attempted murders.
The three underage males were sent to Najayo-Menores jail, while the two teenage girls were sent to the Villa Consuelo jail for minors.
The Police established that the gang was led by 18-year old Joel de la Rosa and 20-year old Jesus Reyes Gonzalez.
