Leading Dominican Republic children's folklorist, Edna Garrido de Boggs died this weekend at the age of 96 at her home in Virginia Beach. She would have been 97 years old on 19 June.
The Ministry of Culture reported that she had been suffering from a lymphoma but refused treatment on the grounds that she had lived a happy life at the side of her husband, folklore researcher Ralph Boggs, who died 16 years ago.
Born in Azua in 1913, she spent her childhood in San Juan de la Maguana and then moved to Santo Domingo at the age of 10 where she qualified as a teacher and practiced for 12 years. In 1946 she traveled to the US to carry out folklore studies under Professor Ralph S. Boggs. She returned to the DR in 1947 to head the folklore division at Bellas Artes. She later married Professor Boggs and moved to the US, where she taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She kept close contact with Dominican folklore, writing numerous books and essays. She received widespread acclaim for her work and is credited with rescuing Dominican traditions and compiling poems and children's games.
