Miss Dominican Republic, Mia Taveras impressed the audience gathered in Los Angeles for the Miss Universe contest. She wore a typical dress designed by Leonel Lirio, framed with a head piece that symbolized the instruments used to play merengue.
Lirio was the designer of the dress Amelia Vega wore when she won Miss Universe in Panama in 2003. For the 2006 creation, Lirio created a collage of fibers with the colors of the flag and bright flowers with a focus on the drum that is so important in the national dance.
Miss DR has been ranked in the top 15 by several leading web sites covering the contest that will be held 23 July at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.
