The Ministry of Education has dismissed 3,000 people who had been receiving paychecks without doing the work for which they were hired. The Ministry ran an audit of payrolls from last August and detected thousands of people collecting paychecks without actually teaching or working at public schools.
The list of dismissals was given to the Dominican Teachers Association (ADP). The Ministry said it would reinstate anyone who could justify the absence from the workplace.
Minister Melanio Paredes told reporters that while firing 3,000 people, the ministry has hired 9,100 new teachers. On 26 May a new call for candidates will open with the possibility of hiring another 5,000 teachers.
Addressing the ADP executive committee, the minister said that when the lazy or the unworthy are removed from the payrolls, this opens up places for people who are qualified and waiting for openings. The minister also announced the start of payroll deductions for the retirement plan, starting in May.
