Despite the 23% fall in Dominican exports last year, the volume of exports to Europe, while still smaller than in 2007, increased by EUR53.7 million over the 2008 figures. This is attributed the decline in tariffs that has come with the implementation of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) signed with the European Union (EU). According to the Dominican Exporters Association (Adoexpo), the county's exports suffered a decrease of around US$1.9 billion in 2009. Exports to Europe were down EUR264.4 million in 2008, going from EUR806.5 in 2007 to EUR542.2 million a year later. Nonetheless, last year they climbed up EUR53.7 million to reach EUR595.8 million.
In 2008, 15% of trade between the Cariforum nations and the EU was with the Dominican Republic, second to Trinidad and Tobago at 30% (due to oil and petroleum products), but above Jamaica at 8%.
However, the trade balance with Europe shows a EUR1.1 billion deficit in favor of the EU. According to data from the Center for Exports and Investments (CEI-RD), exports from the DR in 2008 totaled US$6.75 billion.
The main exports to Europe are raw sugar, bananas, rum, furfural, molasses, enriched syrups, coffee, manufactured products, cacao, leaf tobacco, ferronickel and foodstuffs.
The DR is number 73 on the list of countries that ship to Europe and number 80 on the list of countries that imports goods from the Old Continent.
