Exports need to be certified

Dominican exports to Europe face new challenges. Salmonella found in packaging of bell pepper exports has put a ban on these. And now the Vegetable and Fruits Nursery Cluster says Europe could ban all exports if three consecutive containers with contaminated produce is found. European Union experts say the countries needs to test the containers prior to their export. The US is also making random checks on Dominican produce exports to detect contamination. Jose Miguel de Pena, president of the export cluster, told El Dia that the problem is not in the produce, but in the packing. He says the country needs to certify its packing companies, but has not done so because of lack of government support.
