The Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) reports that their inspectors detected irregularities in a Piper N-43RA flight. As a result, they detained the crew, two Bahamian pilots and the four passengers who were planning to fly to Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos islands. The plane had come from Providenciales and was supposed to return there with the passengers. It is suspected that the passengers were planning to continue their journey to the US by sea.
Arriving shortly after 3pm, the aircraft was refueling and when they filed their flight plan IDAC inspectors noticed something suspicious about the people who were boarding the private plane. When questioned by airport security personnel, one of the passengers confirmed the illegality of the operation. According to reports, this route had been used on other occasions to illegally transport people from Dominican territory to Providenciales. The detainees were arraigned by the District Attorney of Santiago.
