Despite electoral provisions that require candidates to take leave from their government jobs while campaigning, only 375 of 2,560 government officials running for office in the congressional and municipal election have notified the JCE that they have followed the rule, as reported in Diario Libre.
Article 69 of the Electoral Law establishes that ipso facto municipal and other government officials, with the exception of legislators, are suspended in their jobs from the moment their candidacies are accepted. This should have happened on 23 March.
