Santo Domingo Mayor Roberto Salcedo has made his mark with the colorful Canquina children's playgrounds installed across the city. Now he has announced the construction of a theme park at the intersection of Abraham Lincoln, Los Proceres and John F. Kennedy avenues, formerly an unused green space. The park will reportedly cost RD$11 million, mostly spent on the large dinosaur-sized models, and the inauguration is likely to coincide with his re-election campaign. But the park has picked up a bad rap from architects and urban specialists, who feel the area could have been put to better use. Salcedo says the idea is to provide an area for the family.
The civic group, Impulso por una Nueva Nacion (INN), a Push for a New Nation, criticized the new park. The group described it as "visual contamination" and said it made a mockery of citizens and was an unnecessary use of government funds. The group said that the park is another example of how disconnected the current mayor is from the real needs of capital city dwellers. They said the money would have been better spent on remodeling the Parque Eugenio Maria de Hostos on the Malecon, or to improve the abandoned 27 de Febrero Boulevard.
Architect Marcos Barinas, who designed the facilities at Cueva de las Maravillas near La Romana, also has criticized the park for failing to address key citizen issues.
