Banks are lending much more to government than to the private sector this year than last, according to Hoy. Bank loans so far this year are showing recovery, but the public sector increase is greater than the dynamism of private sector. Bank loans total portfolio was up 6.9% from December 2009 to 7 April 2010, compared to 1.2% from December 2008 to 7 April 2009. In the case of loans to government, growth was 22.5% from December 2009 to 7 April 2010; almost double the 11.5% growth registered from December 2008 to April 2009. Hoy reports that bank loans to the private sector only increased 3.6% during the same period, after having declined 3.3% from December 2008 to April 2009.
Banks lent out RD$35.2 billion pesos from December 2009 to April 2010.
