Most flights to Europe from the Dominican Republic have been cancelled or delayed at the two main airports, Las Americas International in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana International in Punta Cana. Travelers to and from Europe are facing major difficulties as a consequence of the volcano eruption in Iceland.
Las Americas International Airport reports the arrival and departure of Iberia to Spain, but not Air Europa. Air France flights will only depart, and no arrivals are scheduled. See www.aerodom.com (http://www.aerodom.com)
Punta Cana International Airport is reporting cancellations of its Air France, Alitalia, KLM, and Thomson flights from London. But Iberworld to Madrid will be departing, and XL Airways from Paris and Air Europa from Madrid are scheduled.
See www.punta-cana-airport.com/Arrivals.cfm (http://www.punta-cana-airport.com/Arrivals.cfm)
As of 16 April, 18 European countries have totally or partially closed their airspace. This includes the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. An estimated 17,000 flights are likely to be cancelled, as reported in El Pais.

Flights FROM Europe suspended too ..

There hasn't been a single take-off in the UK for 4 days now, and one airline has cancelled flights till Wednesday at the earliest.
News reports say this volcano could be blowing smoke for months !!

When the planes finally take to the air, there will be a huge backlog of flights..probably resulting in a delay to my flight in 8 days time.

There have been volcano's erupting all over the world since the beginning of aviation, but this disruption has never happened before ..

Could this be an over-reaction?
