Will the theme park at John F. Kennedy and Los Proceres catch on with city residents? While residents will have the last word, meanwhile the "park" continues to spark controversy. What has caught on, is the Zooberto Park name a Facebook mention baptized it with.
A source told Diario Libre that Santo Domingo Mayor Roberto Salcedo got his inspiration for the park when attending an exhibition of statues of ivy-covered animals in the US. The original site for the creatures would have been the Mirador del Sur Park, but when the green area at the intersection of John F. Kennedy and Los Proceres was legally disputed, as a way of settling the problem, Salcedo chose to place the giant figures there, ensuring ownership of the area.
Politician Pedro Catrain calls the park "visually offensive to all the residents of the capital". He criticized trees were cut down to make room for the giant statues. Hoy reports he commented that it only contributes to creating chaos and that there are plenty more pressing problems for the city council to use the RD$11 million the park is costing.
