NGO Intermon Oxfam, the Spanish branch of Oxfam International, warned today about the Dominican Republic's vulnerability to natural disasters and expressed regret at the "lack of will" to tackle the situation on the part of the government. The agency stressed the fact that the DR's location makes it "highly exposed to natural threats, especially tropical cyclones (hurricanes), tornadoes, flooding, landslides, forest fires and earthquakes". The document, drafted with other international organizations including the Red Cross and Plan International, also mentions "the increase in population pressure, the lack of territorial planning, environmental degradation and poverty".
The NGO goes on to say that the people "do not know about their vulnerable condition and are not aware of the possible consequences..."
The report from Intermon Oxfam says that many of the state actors lack technical know-how at the moment of designing, applying and appropriating a strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
