The director of the General Department of Weights and Measures (Digenor), Julio Santana, has expressed concern about the way in which the Pro-Consumidor consumer protection agency has been rejecting the recently established regulations for dealing with LPG distributors found cheating customers. In fact, Santana said that Pro-Consumidor - a government agency - has "slandered' him for leaving out the consumer agency's suggestions and recommendations.
Pro Consumidor's complaint is based on the fact that according to the document presented by Digenor, if technicians find that an LPG distributor is committing fraud, they can only proceed according to Law 358 (which has no provisions for prison sentences). The agency also complains that Digenor did not take any of their suggestions into consideration.
The Digenor regulations state that more than half of an LPG distributor's pumps have to be cheating customers in order to serve sanctions.
Transport union leader Ramon Perez Figuereo described the regulations as a "disgrace".
