The president of the Association of Commercial Airlines in the DR (Alarcom), Bolivar Batista has told Diario Libre that the lack of government controls have made it possible for "pirate private flights" to compete with legally operating commercial airlines. He said that whoever makes flights that transport passengers for pay has not been authorized to operate commercial flights. He suggested unifying all security controls because it is currently unclear who is in charge of what. He said that operations of Customs and Migration at the airport should be unified.
The president of the National Pilots Association (ANP), Pedro Dominguez told the newspaper that the illegal ring behind these flights has been in operation for years at almost all the country's airports. He commented that clandestine flights have been detected at La Romana, Puerto Plata, El Catey (Samana) and La Isabela (El Higuero) airports, as well as Santiago.
He said that while the unfair competition is happening, more than 50 pilots are unemployed. He said that foreign pilots were involved in the recent flights that were aborted, and that one of the problems is that IDAC inspectors may not speak English.
