On the World Day of Farmers Struggles, a group of displaced farmers marched into Cotui in solidarity with 600 families displaced when the government awarded the mining concession to Barrick Gold/ Pueblo Viejo Dominican Corporation. The group was organized as Articulacion Nacional Campesina (ANC), a farmers' coalition. The farmers were located in Las Lagunas de Cacao and El Yagal. They fear that the Barrick Gold contract will end farming in the region, due to the land expropriations and use of polluted irrigation water. They say the mining operation endangers 60% of rice production in Sanchez Ramirez and Duarte provinces.
The ANC called on the authorities to guarantee the quality of water sources in the area like the Margajita, Majuaca and Yuna rivers.
ANC secretary general Luis Cabrera called for the contract to be reviewed. The Barrick Gold contract was fast-tracked through Congress.
