Fire at El Conde

A fire gutted the second and third floor of the Gente store on El Conde pedestrian shopping street in Santo Domingo's Colonial City on Saturday. The fire began in the appliances department around 10:50am, as reported in El Caribe. 50 firefighters worked to put out the fire well into the afternoon. Employees and shoppers were rapidly evacuated. Store manager Leslie Martinez estimated the losses were in the million-peso range. She said that the aluminum-zinc roof of the third floor collapsed and the front windows of the shop exploded. Neighboring shops on El Conde were closed as a preventive measure. Gente, which has been in operation for 34 years, belongs to Luis and Hugo Valdez, from Spain.
