Hoy newspaper reports on another animal theme park. Animal theme parks are making headlines, after Santo Domingo Mayor Roberto Salcedo built what is being nicknamed "Zooberto" on an empty lot at the very visible John F Kennedy and Proceres avenues intersection. The report says that Lorenzo Duran built his exhibit at a 300 square meter lot outside his home in La Cruz de Mendoza, Santo Domingo Este. Duran, a self-taught sculptor, has built 15 figures, including a giraffe, tiger, lion, eagle, shark, bull, rhinoceros, serpents, crocodile, donkey, cobra, dolphin and other species in his park.
He said that two and a half years ago he sent a letter to Mayor Roberto Salcedo to introduce him to the designs he had created, some of which are now exhibited at the theme park built by the city government. He said that Salcedo probably liked the idea. He said that he is responsible for a six-ton eagle that was placed at the Cibao Baseball Stadium in Santiago several years ago.
He has a 14-foot giraffe in his Santo Domingo Este park, and is also building another one, 20 feet tall.
