More than half of the 183 seats in the Chamber of Deputies will be won in just five of 32 provinces in the congressional and municipal election of 16 May. Of the 178 deputies, 36 correspond to the Province of Santo Domingo, 18 to the National District (Santo Domingo city), 18 to Santiago, 11 to San Cristobal and 8 to La Vega, for a total of 91 legislators, according to Diario Libre. This is equal to half plus one of the total. There are 1,821,218 voters in the Province of Santo Domingo alone.
Diario Libre reports that the party that can win 92 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 17 in the Senate will have absolute control over Congress, being able to command the 50%+1 majority.
Other provinces with more than three deputies are Puerto Plata, Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris) and San Pedro de Macoris with 6, San Juan de la Maguana and Espaillat (Moca) with 5, La Altagracia (Higuey), Barahona, La Romana and Monte Plata with 4, and Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua), Monsenor Nouel (Bonao), Peravia (Bani), Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) and Valverde (Mao) with three deputies.
Bahoruco, Dajabon, El Seibo, Elias Pina, Hato Mayor, Independencia, Montecristi, Pedernales, Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), Samana, Santiago Rodriguez and San Jose de Ocoa have two seats apiece.
In accordance with Article 81 in the revised Constitution, this year a further five legislators will be elected by a method of vote accumulation.
