Dominicans are consuming more petrol than any other nation in Central America and the Caribbean. Listin Diario reports that from January to March 2010, the country consumed 314,514,975 gallons, while Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama consumed on average 85.6 million barrels, or 3,400.27 gallons. The most widely purchased fuel is propane gas that is used both for cooking, industry and vehicle transportation.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce Hydrocarbons Department reports that consumption for the first trimester of 2010 is slightly below consumption for the same period last year. Consumption was 377,269,574 gallons, which is 62,754 gallons less than in 2009.
Listin Diario reports that taxes on fuels in the DR are the highest in the region.
