Two Solenodons have been found in Hato Mayor. Last week, children captured the Hispaniolan Solenodon, one of the island's few native mammals. It is categorized as an endangered species due to the gradual destruction of its habitat, and hunting by dogs, cats and humans. The brown solenodon lives on insects and has a long tail, long snout and relatively long legs. The animal was taken to the National Zoo in Santo Domingo.
On Monday another solenodon was found in El Manchado, 7 kms from where the children found the first one. The second solenodon, a male, is larger. A Ministry of Environment official in Hato Mayor, Miguel Laureano said it could be the father of the younger solenodons found earlier.
Laureano said that there could be dozens in the area, as reported in Listin Diario. This time the authorities ordered its release so as not to disturb its habitat or interrupt its reproduction.
